Why Missions?

American Baptists raise funds to train, equip, and sustain those who are sent both within the USA and outside the USA. We might compare the campaigns for mission to the construction of a home.

First, a basic foundation of support must be built. All the rest of the construction rests on this Basic Mission funding. This infrastructure must be maintained and preserved on a monthly basis. It pays operational expenses and salaries both nationally and internationally. First Baptist Mattoon, annually guarantees a substantial line item in its budget for Basic Mission. The regular offering envelopes may be marked for this purpose, and, to this end, families are encouraged to place more emphasis on developing a pattern of giving to Basic Mission. One way to do so is by following the “One Family, One Prayer, One Gift” flier available in the church office.

All special campaigns attempt to meet an annual “goal” recommended by the Mission Board of FBC. March is usually the month for a special campaign to raise above-and-beyond funds for special tasks or programming within the USA.

We organize and fund ABC missions because Christ said we should, and we do it in these categorical campaigns because it works. But it only works if we remain sensitive and committed to our neighbors, wherever they are. Pray about it and consider how and where God can use your feet, hands, and lips.
