American Baptists raise funds to train, equip, and sustain those who are sent both within the USA and outside the USA. We might compare the campaigns for mission to the construction of a home. First, a basic foundation of support must be built. All the rest of the construction rests on this Basic Mission funding. This infrastructure must be maintained and preserved on a monthly basis. It pays operational expenses and salaries both nationally and internationally. First Baptist Mattoon, annually guarantees a substantial line item in its budget for Basic Mission. The regular offering envelopes may be marked for this purpose, and, to this end, families are encouraged to place more emphasis on developing a pattern of giving to Basic Mission. One way to do so is by following the “One Family, One Prayer, One Gift” flier available in the church office. All special campaigns attempt to meet an annual “goal” recommended by the Mission Board of FBC. March is usually the month for a special campaign to raise above-and-beyond funds for special tasks or programming within the USA. We organize and fund ABC missions because Christ said we should, and we do it in these categorical campaigns because it works. But it only works if we remain sensitive and committed to our neighbors, wherever they are. Pray about it and consider how and where God can use your feet, hands, and lips.
Can Do is a mission promoting organization. This group
of 25 women provide a wonderful core of international
mission support for First Baptist Church. Do you want to
be better informed and know our missionaries personally?
This group is for all women of the church. Please come
and visit us at 6:30 pm in the church library. No
special invitation needed, come join us!
Operation
Christmas Child brings joy and hope to children in
desperated situations around the world through
gift-filled shoe boxes and the Good News of God's love.
This program of Samaritan's Purse provides an
opportunity for people of all ages to be involved in a
simple, hands-on missions project while focusing on the
true meaning of Christmas - Jesus Christ. It's never too
soon to begin buying items for shoeboxes!
In
June we usually launch the “One Great Hour of Sharing”
campaign. We might think of this as the walls of our
mission house. This offering is designed to raise
contingency funds for helping those in emergency
situations around the world. We cooperate with several
other denominations in undertaking this kind of relief
work. Our funds have recently made major contributions
to the victims of the Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina,
and earthquakes in Central America and western Asia.
The
World Mission Offering is the single largest source of
the financial support for International Ministries, and
your gift goes 100% to make disciples of Jesus Christ
internationally. This offering supports the work of:
Over 1,600 volunteer and short-term missionaries 110
long-term missionaries 13 mission special assistants
Over 151 partner mission workers.
Our
last special campaign is usually in December. The
Retired Ministers and Missionaries Offering is designed
to provide emergency funds and gifts of appreciation to
those who have devoted their lives to service in the
Lord’s Vineyard. This phase of the mission house project
might be thought of as completing the detail work inside
the mission home. All the current mission fields are
built upon the work of those who labored for the Lord in
earlier days. We need this fund to continue to supply
their spiritual and physical needs as well
Perhaps
this is the flooring phase of our mission house. This
campaign is called “America for Christ,” and the funding
provides for national mission projects ranging from new
church plants to inner-city half-way houses to education
on an Indian reservation. A special AFC offering
envelope is provided for this campaign.
